DESCRIPTION You convert an item from one material into another, all materials used in the previous item are made into a bar worth the original items material cost; for nonspecial materials, you get a cost of materials equal to half its weapon/armor price. You pay the material cost in materials (Restrictions and availability apply) of the item in question plus the ruby material component. From here on that object is now made of that material from henceforth until changed again. This works for any metal, wood or other special material.
An example would be if you are trying to make an adamant breastplate you would need to provide 10,000 gold that would be used for the switch as well as the 200 gp ruby. And in return, you would get 100 gp worth of steel.
But if you were trying to make mithril into adamantine it would cost 10,000 for the adamantine and you would get 4,000 gold worth of mithril back.
